Chapter 5 - The Desperate Escape

"If you touch one hair on his head, I will kill you myself, Marcus," I growled into the phone.
Marcus simply laughed, a cold and arrogant sound that echoed in the quiet hospital room.
"You have exactly two hours to bring the drive to the abandoned shipyard on Pier 4," Marcus ordered.
"Come alone, or the kid goes into the ocean."
He hung up the phone, leaving me staring at the dark screen in pure rage.
Sarah tried to rip the IV lines out of her arm, determined to come with me.
"You are too weak, Sarah," I pleaded, trying to hold her gently against the bed.
"He is my baby, Charles, I am not staying here!" she screamed, fighting through her agonizing pain.
I knew I couldn't stop a fierce mother, so I helped her carefully remove the monitors.
We sneaked out of the hospital through the basement laundry exit to avoid Marcus's remaining spies.
I stole a white linen cart and pushed her hidden beneath the sheets until we reached the parking garage.
We broke into a generic gray sedan someone had left unlocked with the keys in the visor.
I drove wildly through the neon-lit streets of Miami, breaking every speed limit to reach Pier 4 in time.
Sarah sat in the passenger seat, clutching her bleeding abdomen and praying silently.
"I am so sorry I kept him from you," she whispered, looking out the dark window.
"We will fix everything when we get him back," I promised, squeezing her cold hand.
We finally approached the rusted gates of the abandoned shipyard, completely surrounded by darkness.
I parked the car behind a stack of massive shipping containers and told Sarah to stay hidden.
I grabbed a heavy metal wrench from the trunk and slipped the USB drive into my front pocket.
As I stepped out into the open clearing, bright halogen spotlights suddenly blinded me from all directions.

But the voice that commanded me to put my hands up didn't belong to Marcus.
It belonged to a Miami police swat team, and dozens of red laser sights were aimed directly at my chest.
