Chapter 13 - The Confession

I drove back to my house with a suffocating weight pressing down on my chest.

The suburban streets that had looked so peaceful just hours ago now felt like a giant, heavily monitored trap.

I unlocked the front door and found Sarah sitting at the kitchen island, drinking a cup of decaf tea.

The house was completely silent, indicating that Leo had already been put to bed.

She looked up at me, her beautiful eyes immediately catching the raw terror I was trying so desperately to hide.

"You didn't go to the hardware store, Charles," she said softly, noting my empty hands and pale face.

I pulled the silver bullet and the crumpled note from my pocket and placed them heavily onto the marble counter.

I sat down across from her and confessed absolutely everything.

I told her about the black sedan, the meeting with Elias, and the horrifying truth about the forty million dollars.

I watched her face cycle through profound shock, devastating fear, and finally, absolute, unmitigated rage.

"He used our baby's identity to hide cartel blood money?" Sarah whispered, her hands trembling violently.

"I have to access the Cayman account and transfer the funds back to Cortez," I explained urgently.

"It is the only way to buy our permanent freedom."

Sarah stood up, pacing the length of the kitchen, her maternal instincts violently overriding her fear.

"If Cortez knows the money is in Leo's name, returning it won't make us safe, Charles," she argued fiercely.

"He will see us as a permanent liability. The second that transfer clears, he will send his executioners to finish the job."

I knew she was absolutely right; making a deal with a cartel boss was nothing more than a delayed suicide note.

"Then we have to find a way to use the money to completely destroy him," I stated, pulling my laptop from my briefcase.

I spent the next four hours furiously typing, utilizing every backdoor accounting trick I had learned in the corporate world.

I finally managed to breach the Cayman Island server using Leo's stolen social security number as the primary cipher.

The screen illuminated with a massive, terrifying digital balance: $40,000,000.00.

But as I stared at the screen, a secondary security protocol instantly activated on my laptop.

A red warning banner flashed across the monitor, indicating that a third party was actively tracing my IP address.

"Someone else is in the network," I shouted, slamming the laptop shut to sever the connection.

The heavy glass of our sliding patio door suddenly shattered inward with a deafening crash.

A canister of military-grade tear gas rolled across the hardwood floor, instantly filling the living room with blinding, choking white smoke.

The cartel had not waited for the end of the week.
