Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

I pressed my face against the cold glass of the cruiser window, watching the absolute chaos unfold.

Through the thick smoke, my stepmother emerged from the burning tree line like a demon.

She was covered in black ash, holding the stolen shotgun, and completely surrounded by heavily armed police.

"Put the weapon down, you have nowhere left to go!" the police captain roared over a loudspeaker.

She looked around wildly, realizing her elaborate, psychotic plan had completely failed.

Her wealthy lawyer could not buy her way out of shooting at multiple police officers.

She locked eyes with me through the window of the cruiser, her face twisting into a mask of pure hatred.

Instead of surrendering, she raised the shotgun and aimed it directly at the gas tank of the police car I was sitting in.

She was going to blow us all up in one final act of pure spite.

Before she could pull the trigger, a muddy, bloody figure tackled her violently from the side.

It was Mark.

He had somehow survived the initial shotgun blast and dragged himself out of the muddy ditch.

He slammed her into the pavement, wrestling the heavy weapon out of her hands.

The police swarmed them instantly, ripping the shotgun away and pinning her face down on the hard asphalt.

She screamed and thrashed like a wild animal as they clicked heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

Mark collapsed onto the road, bleeding heavily from his shoulder, but he looked up at me and gave a weak nod.

He had finally done one completely selfless thing to protect his child.

The paramedics rushed over to treat him and the unconscious deputy lying near the tunnel.

The fire department arrived minutes later, blasting the blazing forest with heavy streams of water.

The nightmare was finally over, and the monsters were officially locked in cages.

I held my sleeping baby close to my heart, completely exhausted but overwhelmingly grateful to be alive.

The police captain opened the cruiser door and gently draped a warm blanket over my shoulders.

"You are completely safe now, ma'am, and they are never getting out of prison," the captain promised me softly.
