Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Betrayal

My father stood there breathing heavily, illuminated by the orange glow of the forest fire across the road.

He had managed to escape police custody and track us down to protect his wife.

"I cannot let you ruin my marriage, sweetheart," he said, taking a step toward me.

I backed away in absolute horror, realizing my own flesh and blood was completely beyond saving.

"She tried to burn your grandchild alive!" I screamed, tears streaming down my face.

My father shook his head violently, refusing to accept the undeniable reality of the situation.

"She just makes mistakes sometimes, we just need to talk it out," he muttered delusionally.

He reached his hand out, demanding that I give him the baby carrier.

I looked down at the unconscious deputy's utility belt lying on the asphalt.

Without thinking, I dropped to my knees and snatched the heavy pepper spray canister from the holster.

I pointed it directly at my father's face and pressed the trigger down hard.

A thick cloud of orange chemical spray hit him right in the eyes.

He screamed in blinding agony, dropping the baseball bat and clawing desperately at his face.

I grabbed the deputy's radio, pressed the emergency button, and screamed our exact location into the microphone.

I picked up my baby and ran down the center of the empty highway toward the flashing lights in the distance.

Multiple police cruisers were speeding toward us from the town center.

I waved my arms frantically, and the lead car slammed on its brakes just inches away from me.

Four heavily armed officers jumped out, immediately securing the perimeter around me.

I pointed back toward the tunnel where my father was still screaming in pain.

"He assaulted a deputy, and his wife started the forest fire!" I yelled to the officers.

The police swarmed the area, aggressively pushing my blinded father to the ground and handcuffing him.

As I sat safely in the back of a police cruiser, I watched them drag him away.

Suddenly, a loud series of gunshots echoed from the burning side of the highway, and an officer screamed for a medic.
