Chapter 4 - The Moving Trap

I stared at the glowing digital map, a cold wave of pure terror washing over my entire body.

"Why is your GPS routed to her lake house?" I asked, keeping my voice as steady as possible.

Mark gripped the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles turning completely white.

"It is the only place the police will not think to look for us," he lied, refusing to make eye contact.

I knew he was lying because the lake house was registered under a completely different shell company name.

Only my stepmother's inner circle knew that property even existed.

I slowly moved my hand down to my duffel bag and quietly grabbed the heavy pruning shears again.

"Pull the truck over right now, Mark," I ordered firmly.

He ignored me and pressed his foot harder onto the accelerator pedal.

"She offered me a million dollars from your mother's trust fund if I just brought the baby to the lake," Mark confessed, his voice breaking.

He told me he had massive gambling debts and that this was the only way they would let him live.

I realized with sickening clarity that the attempted murder with the mower was just a backup plan.

I was trapped in a speeding vehicle with a man who was selling our child to a monster.

I knew I could not overpower him physically while protecting the baby in the back seat.

I waited until we approached a sharp curve on the rural mountain road.

I suddenly lunged across the center console and grabbed the steering wheel with both hands.

I yanked the wheel violently to the right, forcing the heavy truck off the paved road.

We crashed through a wooden fence and slammed hard into a shallow ditch of mud.

The airbags deployed instantly, filling the cabin with thick, choking white smoke.

I unbuckled my seatbelt, grabbed the baby carrier, and kicked the passenger door open.

I scrambled up the muddy embankment just as a pair of headlights cut through the darkness.

A police cruiser slowly pulled to a stop on the shoulder of the road, and the passenger door swung open.

Instead of a police officer, my stepmother stepped out of the stolen cruiser, holding a loaded shotgun.
