Chapter 9 - The Fiery Trap

The blazing red and blue lights of a dozen police cruisers instantly flooded the dark woods.
Evelyn cursed violently, her absolute confidence finally breaking into sheer, unadulterated panic.
She realized her meticulously crafted master plan was entirely falling apart in real time.
I didn't hesitate for a single second.
I dove forward and violently tackled my mother to the floor, wrestling the heavy revolver out of her hand.
She screamed and clawed at my face, but I aggressively pinned her arms behind her back.
"It's over, Mom," I said, breathing heavily as the police sirens grew deafeningly loud.
Evelyn suddenly stopped struggling and let out a chilling, maniacal laugh.
"It is never over, Caleb," she whispered viciously.
She reached into her coat pocket with her free hand and pulled out a small, electronic detonator.
She pressed the glowing red button before I could rip it away from her grasp.
A massive explosion violently rocked the back of the cabin, instantly igniting the kitchen in a wall of roaring flames.
The blast threw me backward, completely knocking the breath out of my lungs.
Evelyn scrambled to her feet and sprinted out the broken front door into the chaotic night.
I coughed through the thick, toxic black smoke, desperately crawling toward the couch to find Maya.
The fire spread with terrifying speed, rapidly consuming the old, dry wooden walls of the cabin.
"Caleb! Help me!" Maya screamed from behind a fallen wooden beam.
Sarah was desperately trying to lift the heavy, burning wood off Maya's trapped leg.
I rushed over, ignoring the blistering heat searing my skin, and hoisted the massive beam upward.
Maya pulled her leg free, and I swept her entirely into my arms.
The front exit was completely blocked by a towering wall of intense, raging fire.
Our only escape was a heavy metal security door leading to the basement cellar, but the electronic keypad was jammed.
The flames licked at our heels as the cabin roof began to groan and collapse above us.
May you like
"The keypad is completely dead!" Sarah yelled, pounding desperately on the unyielding metal door.
The blazing ceiling finally gave way, sending a massive shower of burning debris raining down directly onto our heads.
