Chapter 6 - The Extraction Plan

My father looked older, but his cold, calculating eyes were exactly as I remembered them.
"You were always far too curious for your own good, Caleb," he sighed heavily.
I didn't give him the satisfaction of a verbal response.
I grabbed the heavy metal fire extinguisher sitting on Sarah's desk and hurled it directly at his head.
The heavy canister clipped his shoulder, knocking him off balance and sending his pistol clattering to the floor.
"Run!" I screamed at Sarah.
We dove through the secondary exit at the back of her office just as the tactical team opened fire.
Bullets shredded the drywall around us, filling the narrow hallway with thick, choking dust.
We burst out into the dark alleyway and scrambled into Sarah's old, rusted sedan.
She hot-wired the engine and slammed her foot onto the gas pedal, tearing out onto the wet street.
"We can't just hide anymore," Sarah yelled over the roaring engine.
"They have the police, the money, and heavily armed mercenaries on their side."
I knew she was completely right.
The only way to end this nightmare was to get Maya out of that heavily guarded hospital.
I instructed Sarah to drive to a sketchy medical supply warehouse on the edge of the city.
I used the last of my hidden emergency cash to bribe a warehouse worker for two authentic paramedic uniforms.
We disguised ourselves perfectly and stole a decommissioned ambulance from the back lot.
We drove straight up to the emergency room loading dock with the lights flashing brightly.
I bypassed the main security desk by claiming we were an emergency critical transport team.
We reached Maya's floor just as two heavily armed tactical mercenaries stepped out of the elevator.
They were dressed as regular hospital security, but I recognized their military boots immediately.
They were heading straight for Maya's private recovery room.
I pulled a stolen medical syringe filled with a heavy sedative from my pocket.
I ambushed the first mercenary from behind, driving the needle deep into his neck.
He collapsed instantly, but the second mercenary quickly spun around and drew his weapon.

Before he could pull the trigger, Maya's door swung violently open.
Maya stood there in a hospital gown, slamming a heavy metal IV pole directly into the mercenary's face.
