Chapter 7 - The Safe House

The mercenary crumpled to the floor, completely unconscious from the brutal blow.
Maya dropped the heavy IV pole and fell directly into my arms, sobbing with pure relief.
"I knew you wouldn't leave me here," she cried, holding onto my neck tightly.
"I will never leave you," I promised, quickly wrapping a warm blanket around her shaking shoulders.
Sarah helped us load Maya into a wheelchair, and we sprinted back toward the service elevator.
We managed to reach the stolen ambulance just as the hospital's main alarm system began to blare.
Sarah drove us aggressively through the winding city streets, making sure we weren't being followed.
We finally arrived at a remote cabin in the woods that belonged to Sarah's late grandfather.
It was entirely off the grid, with no internet or cellular towers nearby to track our location.
I built a fire in the old stone hearth and helped Maya settle onto the comfortable couch.
For the first time in three terrifying days, we finally had a brief moment to catch our breath.
Sarah sat at the kitchen table, manually reviewing the printed trust documents she had stolen from her office.
"Caleb, there is a massive clause in this document that changes absolutely everything," Sarah announced suddenly.
I walked over to the table and looked at the highlighted legal text.
The trust didn't just require an heir to be born to release the funds.
It required the biological mother of the child to legally sign away her parental rights upon delivery.
My mother wasn't just trying to slowly poison Maya out of sheer spite or hatred.
She was trying to break her mind completely so she would willingly sign the documents in a state of sheer psychosis.
"They need my signature," Maya whispered from the couch, her eyes wide with a horrifying realization.
"That is why Evelyn brought the notary papers to the shed on the second day."
Suddenly, the heavy wooden front door of the cabin violently splintered inward.
A massive armored SUV had just rammed directly through the front porch of the cabin.
May you like
Marcus stepped out of the wrecked vehicle, holding a heavy tactical shotgun directly at us.
"Sign the papers right now, Maya, or I kill your husband," Marcus demanded with a sick smile.
