Chapter 5 - THE CORRUPT COP

Detective Carter thought he was untouchable. He lived in a gated community, drove a luxury car paid for by Marcus Thorne’s bribes, and slept soundly knowing he had buried Elena’s case.

He woke up at 4:00 AM to find me sitting at the edge of his bed.

Carter scrambled backward, reaching for the service pistol on his nightstand. I casually swatted his hand away and pressed a suppressed barrel against his kneecap.

"Don't," I warned.

"You're crazy," Carter stammered, sweating profusely. "You assault a police officer, you're dead."

"You aren't a cop, Carter. You're a mercenary who took a bribe to let my wife's attackers walk free," I said, tossing a thick manila folder onto his lap.

Carter opened it with shaking hands. Inside were offshore bank statements proving he had accepted two hundred thousand dollars from the Thorne Syndicate the day after Elena was hospitalized.

"I have copies," I said smoothly. "If you ever look in my direction again, or if you tip off Marcus Thorne that the FBI is coming, this folder goes to Internal Affairs and the local news."

"What do you want?" Carter whispered, utterly defeated.

"I want you to tell the local precincts to stand down for the next twenty-four hours," I commanded. "I am going to pay Marcus Thorne a visit. And I don't want any blue lights interrupting my conversation."
