Chapter 6 - The Ghost Protocol

The revelation that Vanesa had forged Daniel's signature completely changed the entire battlefield.
Daniel was not a willing participant in the fraud; he was just another oblivious victim in her grand scheme.
However, his cruel words in my living room still echoed painfully in my mind.
I knew that if I ran to him with this evidence now, he would completely refuse to believe me.
Vanesa had brainwashed him so thoroughly that he would likely accuse me of fabricating the legal documents.
I decided to initiate a complete and total ghost protocol.
I packed a small suitcase, loaded my dog Coco into the car, and drove to a remote cabin in the mountains.
I turned my phone completely off and locked the lawyer's official findings in a secure digital vault.
I needed Daniel to completely experience the massive consequences of his choices without me there to rescue him.
For the first time in my entire life, I was not going to play the role of the dependable, fixing sister.
The days leading up to the wedding were blissfully quiet in my mountain retreat.
I hiked, read books, and completely detached myself from the toxic circus unfolding in the city.
Back in town, however, absolute chaos was rapidly descending upon the happy couple.
Because the fraudulent loan had been frozen, Vanesa's final payments to the vendors began to aggressively bounce.
The luxury caterer officially canceled their massive contract exactly three days before the reception.
The florist refused to deliver the extravagant centerpieces unless they were paid entirely in cold, hard cash.
Daniel had always relied on my emergency credit cards and my problem-solving skills to fix his messes.
Now, he was completely alone, facing the wrath of a bride whose perfect day was rapidly crumbling.
On the evening before the wedding, I finally turned my phone back on just to check on my parents.
My screen instantly exploded with seventy-two missed calls and completely frantic text messages.
Most of them were from Daniel, begging me to please call him back immediately.
His final voicemail was left just ten minutes before I turned on my device.
His voice was completely shattered, heavily slurring his words as he choked back massive sobs.
He begged me to tell him where I was hiding.
May you like
He whispered that he was standing on a bridge, and he didn't know how to keep living.
I immediately grabbed my car keys, my heart pounding entirely out of my chest as I raced into the dark night.
