Chapter 5 - The Hard Boundary

I immediately grabbed my car keys and practically flew down the highway to my parents' house.
I burst through their front door, completely ignoring my usual polite greeting.
I sat them down at the kitchen table and laid out everything Fiona had told me.
My mother wept uncontrollably, refusing to believe that her golden boy would ever forge her signature.
My father, however, turned completely pale and rushed to his home office to check the property deeds online.
He returned a few minutes later, looking as though he had aged ten years.
A massive lien had just been filed against their house by a predatory lending company.
Daniel had actually done it.
He had legally compromised his own parents to fund Vanesa's endless vanity project.
I immediately pulled out my phone and called a lawyer friend who specialized in real estate fraud.
I instructed my parents to officially report the fraudulent signature to the authorities before the loan could fully clear.
My mother begged me to stop, absolutely terrified that Daniel would go to prison.
I set the hardest boundary of my entire life right then and there.
I told them that if they allowed Daniel and Vanesa to steal their home, I would walk away from this family entirely.
I refused to sit back and watch them become homeless just to appease a sociopath.
My father finally found his courage and made the painful phone call to the bank's fraud department.
The bank immediately froze the predatory loan and locked all of Daniel's accounts pending a federal investigation.
Exactly two hours later, my front door violently flew open.
Daniel stormed into my living room, his face bright red with unadulterated fury.
He didn't look like the loving brother who used to share his pasta with me.
He looked like a completely broken, desperate hostage defending his captor.
He screamed that I was completely jealous of Vanesa and actively trying to ruin his perfect life.
I stood perfectly still, looking at him with nothing but deep, profound pity.
I softly told him that I loved him, but I would not let him destroy our parents.
Daniel pointed a shaking finger at my face and officially uninvited me from the wedding.
He promised that I was absolutely dead to him.
He stormed out, slamming the door so hard the framed photos on my wall crashed to the floor.
As I knelt down to sweep up the broken glass, my lawyer friend called me back with an urgent update.

The fraud department had discovered that the predatory loan wasn't taken out by Daniel at all.
Vanesa had completely forged Daniel's signature, as well as my parents', leaving him entirely in the dark.
