Chapter 9 - The False Victory

I stared down at the glossy photograph resting on the diner table.
It was a picture of my father, Chief Justice Arthur Sterling, sitting in a dark restaurant booth.
Sitting directly across from him, shaking his hand, was the head of the Chicago cartel.
“Your father isn't the righteous hero you think he is, Anna,” David sneered, enjoying the shock on my face.
“He has been protecting the cartel's money laundering operations for a decade.”
“That is why I married you, because it was the ultimate insurance policy.”
I wanted to throw up, but my training kicked in, demanding I stay completely rational.
“You are lying,” I said firmly.
“My father would never compromise the Supreme Court.”
“Check the date on the back of the photo,” David challenged.
Before I could reach for the picture, the glass doors of the diner shattered completely.
A heavily armed FBI tactical team swarmed the restaurant, aiming laser sights directly at David’s chest.
“David Hughes, you are under arrest for federal money laundering and conspiracy to commit murder,” the lead agent shouted.
They dragged David out of the booth, slapping heavy iron cuffs on his wrists.
David laughed maniacally as they pushed him toward the door.
“Ask your daddy about the photo, Anna!” he screamed into the night air.
I quickly snatched the photograph off the table and shoved it deep into my coat pocket before the agents could see it.
The lead Marshal escorted me back to the hospital, assuring me that the threat was completely neutralized.
By the next morning, the news of the massive cartel bust was on every single television network.
David was denied bail and placed in solitary confinement.
Sylvia had flipped on the entire law firm, securing herself a plea deal while destroying David's career permanently.
The corrupt local sheriff and the judge who signed the fake conservatorship were both indicted by a grand jury.
My bank accounts were completely unfrozen, and the offshore cartel funds were seized by the government.
I was finally safe, and my baby was entirely out of danger.
I spent the next three days recovering in the hospital, feeling a profound sense of absolute victory.
I had beaten the monsters who tried to destroy my life, and I had done it using my own intelligence.
On the fourth day, my father's private security team drove me to his heavily fortified estate in the Virginia countryside.
I walked through the massive oak doors, feeling the warmth of the fireplace and the safety of the stone walls.
My father was out at a judicial hearing, so the house was beautifully quiet.
I walked into his private study to leave a thank-you note on his desk.
As I reached for a pen, I accidentally bumped a stack of heavy legal files.
One of the folders fell to the Persian rug, spilling its contents across the floor.

I knelt down to pick up the papers, but my hands completely froze when I saw the label on the tab.
It was an FBI operational dossier, classified at the highest level, and it was titled “Operation Trojan Horse.”
