Chapter 10 - The Betrayal

The thick red letters on the classified dossier burned into my retinas.

I slowly picked up the scattered papers, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

The first page was a psychological profile detailing my entire life.

It listed my vulnerabilities, my desire for a normal family, and my deep-seated need for privacy.

The second page contained extensive surveillance photos of David Hughes, taken five years ago.

The photos showed David exchanging briefcases with known cartel associates long before I had ever met him.

My father had known exactly who David was and exactly what his law firm was doing years before our wedding.

I flipped to the third page, and the air completely vanished from my lungs.

It was a signed operational directive from the Department of Justice, personally authorized by my father.

The memo outlined a highly dangerous, incredibly illegal undercover sting operation.

The government needed a clean, unsuspected asset to infiltrate David’s life and gain access to his private networks.

They needed someone who would naturally attract an arrogant, ambitious lawyer looking to secure political connections.

My father hadn't just respected my privacy when I moved away and met David.

He had orchestrated the entire relationship.

He had intentionally fed my location and profile to David’s firm, knowing David would pursue the daughter of a Supreme Court Justice.

My entire marriage, my suffering, and the horrific abuse I endured from Sylvia were all perfectly calculated variables in my father's RICO case.

He used his own pregnant daughter as an undercover pawn to take down a cartel without ever telling her.

I dropped the papers onto the desk, feeling a physical sickness radiate through my entire body.

David was a monster, but he was exactly the monster my father had designed him to be.

The quiet, safe victory I thought I had won shattered into a million jagged pieces.

I heard the heavy oak front door open and the sound of my father's confident footsteps echoing in the hallway.

“Anna, are you in there?” he called out warmly.

I slowly turned around, gripping the classified file in my trembling hands.

I realized with absolute, terrifying clarity that the most dangerous man in my life wasn't sitting in a federal prison cell.

He was standing right outside the study door, smiling as he turned the brass handle.
