Chapter 7 - The Mole

I stared at the terrifying video playing on loop on my phone.
Someone had planted a hidden camera inside my secure hospital room.
David didn't just have corrupt local sheriffs on his payroll.
He had a highly skilled mole operating inside the hospital, entirely bypassing my father’s elite security detail.
I didn't scream, and I didn't press the nurse call button.
If I alerted my father or the Marshals right now, the mole would simply disappear into the shadows.
I needed to catch them red-handed.
I carefully scanned the ceiling tiles, the air vents, and the medical equipment surrounding my bed.
My eyes finally landed on the digital smoke detector positioned directly above my tray table.
A tiny, almost imperceptible red light blinked rhythmically behind the plastic casing.
I pulled the blanket up over my shoulders and pretended to go to sleep.
I waited in the dark for three agonizing hours, listening to the steady hum of the fetal monitor.
At exactly three in the morning, the heavy door to my room slowly clicked open.
A nurse wearing blue scrubs and a surgical mask quietly stepped inside.
She didn't check my vitals or look at my charts.
She walked straight toward my tray table and reached for the encrypted laptop I had left powered down.
She pulled a small USB drive from her pocket, preparing to wipe the evidence I had gathered.
I reached under my pillow and pulled out the heavy glass water pitcher I had hidden there earlier.
I swung it as hard as my weakened body would allow.
The heavy glass smashed directly into the side of the nurse's head.
She let out a sharp cry and collapsed onto the linoleum floor, dropping the USB drive.
The noise instantly alerted the Marshals outside.
Two armed agents rushed into the room, their weapons drawn and flashlights blinding.
“Secure her!” I shouted, pointing at the groaning woman on the floor.
The agents quickly pinned her down and ripped the surgical mask off her face.
I expected to see a stranger, a hired thug, or one of David's legal assistants.
Instead, I was staring directly at the terrified face of my own sister-in-law, Clara.
David’s younger sister had always played the quiet, sweet victim in the family.
“Clara?” I whispered in absolute shock.
“Why would you do this?”
Clara spat blood onto the hospital floor and laughed bitterly.
“Because David promised to pay off my gambling debts if I deleted the offshore banking logs.”
“You are just as pathetic as he is,” I told her with pure disgust.
One of the Marshals picked up the USB drive she had dropped.
“Ma'am, this isn't a data wipe drive,” the agent said, examining the device closely.
“It is a digital detonator.”
I looked at Clara, who was suddenly sobbing hysterically.
“David lied to me,” Clara wept.
“He told me it would just erase the laptop.”
“He was trying to blow up the entire hospital wing,” I realized, the sheer horror washing over me.

Before the Marshals could drag Clara away, my phone rang loudly on the nightstand.
It was David.
