Chapter 4 - The Escape

The betrayal stung worse than a physical slap across the face.

The man Garrett had supposedly hired to protect me had just sold my life to the highest bidder.

The deputy yanked my door open and reached in to grab my arm.

I did not have the strength to fight a grown man, but I had seventy-two years of survival instincts.

I noticed the deputy had left the cruiser’s engine running when he stepped out.

As his hand closed around my wrist, I kicked my heavy boot directly into his kneecap.

He let out a sharp yell and stumbled backward onto the asphalt.

Arthur lunged forward to grab me, his face twisted in sudden fury.

I threw my handbag directly into Arthur’s face, momentarily blinding him.

I scrambled out of the limousine and sprinted toward the idling police cruiser.

My knees ached and my lungs burned, but pure adrenaline pushed me forward.

I threw myself into the driver’s seat of the police car and slammed the door.

Arthur drew a handgun from his jacket and aimed it at the windshield.

I threw the gearshift into drive and slammed my foot onto the accelerator.

Arthur dove out of the way just in time as the heavy cruiser roared past him.

I looked in the rearview mirror and saw him screaming at the treacherous lawyer.

I was driving a stolen police vehicle down a rural highway with no money and no allies.

But I still had the brass key safely tucked inside my boot.

I drove for thirty miles before pulling onto a dirt access road hidden behind an abandoned barn.

I needed to ditch the cruiser before they tracked the GPS.

I wiped down the steering wheel, climbed out, and began walking toward the nearby town.

The bank Garrett mentioned was only a few miles away.

I walked into the dusty town square just as the sun began to set.

I approached the First National Bank, grateful to see the doors were still unlocked.

But as I reached for the brass handle, I froze completely in my tracks.

Standing inside the lobby, talking casually to the bank manager, was Garrett’s daughter, Victoria.
