Chapter 2 - The Getaway

I scrambled into the back of the limousine just as the first gunshot shattered the quiet afternoon.

The glass of my sister’s trailer exploded into jagged pieces behind me.

The lawyer dove into the driver’s seat and slammed his foot on the gas pedal.

The heavy vehicle surged forward, kicking up a massive cloud of dust and rocks.

I huddled on the leather floorboards, clutching Garrett’s letter against my chest.

The black SUVs swerved aggressively, trying to block our path to the main highway.

The lawyer aggressively spun the steering wheel, forcing our heavy bumper into the side of the lead SUV.

Metal crunched, and the enemy vehicle spun out into a deep drainage ditch.

We rocketed onto the paved highway, leaving the other two SUVs struggling to navigate the dust cloud.

I finally pulled myself up onto the seat, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

“They shot at me,” I gasped, unable to process the violence.

“Arthur and Victoria are not simply spoiled children,” the lawyer replied, keeping his eyes on the rearview mirror.

“They are deeply indebted to some very dangerous people.”

“Your husband discovered they were using his real estate firm to launder millions for a cartel.”

The gravity of the situation finally crashed down upon my shoulders.

I wasn’t just a grieving widow who had been cast out of her home.

I was the only witness holding the key to a fortune they desperately needed to survive.

“Where does this key go?” I asked, holding up the brass object.

“It opens a private deposit box at a small bank in the next county,” he answered.

“Garrett placed the real deed to the estate and the offshore account codes inside it.”

He checked the mirror again and his face turned entirely pale.

“But we have a very big problem, Eleanor.”

I turned around to look out the back window.

There was a police cruiser speeding up behind us with its sirens blaring.

And sitting in the passenger seat of the police car was Garrett’s son, Arthur.
