Chapter 6 - The Infiltration

I stared at the lavish invitation Carter had somehow managed to procure from one of his corporate informants.

"You expect me to walk into the engagement party of the man who just left me at the altar yesterday?" I asked in utter disbelief.

Carter handed me a sleek, diamond-studded earpiece and a tiny encrypted flash drive.

"It is the only way into his family's private server room, which is hidden behind the main ballroom," he explained calmly.

A few hours later, I was stepping out of a black town car, wearing a stunning red evening gown that Carter's team had provided.

The sprawling mansion was packed with the city's most corrupt elite, all laughing and drinking expensive champagne.

I kept my head slightly lowered, blending in perfectly with the sea of wealthy socialites and arrogant politicians.

"Radio check, Maisie, I have eyes on you through the mansion's hacked security cameras," Carter whispered directly into my ear.

"I hear you loud and clear," I murmured back, discreetly taking a glass of champagne from a passing waiter.

I spotted Tristan across the room, smiling brightly as he wrapped his arm around a beautiful blonde woman in a silk dress.

A wave of nausea washed over me, but I forced myself to focus purely on the mission at hand.

"The server room is down the east hallway, behind the heavy wooden door marked 'Private Study,'" Carter instructed.

I slowly navigated through the crowded ballroom, smoothly dodging familiar faces who had attended my ruined wedding.

I finally slipped into the quiet, dimly lit east hallway, my heart pounding fiercely against my ribs.

The heavy wooden door was locked with a digital keypad, but Carter quickly fed me the four-digit bypass code.

I stepped into the freezing server room, immediately plugging the tiny flash drive into the main terminal.

A progress bar appeared on the screen, slowly downloading the encrypted forgery files we desperately needed.

"Eighty percent complete, Maisie, you are doing perfectly," Carter's voice encouraged me through the earpiece.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door behind me violently swung open and loudly slammed against the wall.

I whipped around, terrified, and accidentally knocked a stack of empty server trays onto the floor with a massive crash.

Standing in the doorway, holding two glasses of whiskey and staring at me with cold fury, was Tristan.

"I thought I smelled cheap perfume," he sneered, locking the door firmly behind him.
