Chapter 1 - The Secret Revealed

The silence in the community center was so absolute that I could hear my own heartbeat thumping loudly in my ears.
Tristan stood a few feet away, his arrogant smile slowly melting into a mask of pure confusion.
The imposing Army commander remained in a crisp salute, his eyes locked on my father's trembling frame.
My dad wiped his dirt-stained hands on his slacks before slowly returning the salute with perfect military precision.
"General Vance," my father whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of a thousand buried memories.
"We thought we lost you in the desert twenty years ago, Major Evans," the General replied, his own voice thick with unshed emotion.
Tristan let out a harsh, mocking laugh that shattered the quiet dignity of the room.
"This is pathetic, Maisie," Tristan sneered, adjusting the lapels of his expensive tailored suit.
"Did your gardener father really hire military actors just to save face because I dumped you at the altar?" he asked, looking around for validation from his wealthy guests.
General Vance dropped his salute and slowly turned to face my ex-fiancé.
The look in the General's eyes was so terrifyingly cold that Tristan actually took a frantic step backward.
"I am a three-star General of the United States Armed Forces, and you are currently disrespecting a man who saved three hundred American lives," Vance said softly.
Tristan's mother, Mara, gasped loudly and grabbed her son's arm in a sudden panic.
"Furthermore, Major Evans is the true founder and controlling shareholder of Vanguard Defense Solutions," the General continued, his voice ringing across the hall.
The blood completely drained from Tristan's face in an instant.
Everyone in town knew that Vanguard Defense was the only massive corporate client keeping Tristan's family business from going completely bankrupt.
If what the General said was true, my father literally owned the company that kept Tristan's family in their lavish lifestyle.
My father finally stood tall, the tired hunch in his back vanishing as he glared at the boy who had just broken my heart.
"I hid my wealth and my past to protect my daughter from greedy, heartless people exactly like you," my father stated firmly.
Tristan immediately stepped forward with his hands raised, desperately opening his mouth to apologize and beg for forgiveness.
Before Tristan could speak a single word, the General aggressively cut him off.
"Major, we need to secure you and your daughter immediately," the General said, pulling a thick black folder from his aide's hands.
"Why right now?" my father asked, his protective instincts flaring as he quickly pulled me behind his back.
May you like
General Vance shoved the classified folder into my father's chest, his own face turning completely pale.
"Because the ruthless cartel that murdered your wife just found out you are still alive, and their heavily armed men have already surrounded this building."
