Chapter 1 - The Emerald Silk

Evelyn Carlisle waited for a response with a perfectly practiced, condescending smile.
Elena did not reach for her drugstore notebook.
She simply held the woman’s gaze and let the silence stretch out.
Dante stepped smoothly between them before Evelyn could say another word.
"Elena is not here to take notes, Evelyn," Dante said in a voice that was quiet but carried a distinct warning.
"She is my personal guest for the evening."
Evelyn’s smile completely vanished into a thin, tight line.
"Of course," Evelyn stammered quickly, taking a nervous step backward.
"I meant absolutely no disrespect, Dante."
"See that you don't," he replied coldly, turning his back on the wealthy donor.
He placed a warm hand on the small of Elena’s back to guide her into the main hall.
Elena felt a strange jolt of electricity shoot up her spine at his sudden touch.
"You didn't have to do that," she whispered as they walked away.
"I don't tolerate disrespect toward my people," Dante answered without looking down.
The grand auditorium was breathtaking, filled with gold leaf architecture and crimson velvet.
The elite of Manhattan society buzzed with anticipation for the rare performance.
Elena tried to make herself as small as possible in the massive VIP box.
She kept her eyes firmly fixed on the empty stage below.
Then, the heavy velvet curtains suddenly parted.
Maestro Adrian Bell walked onto the stage to a thunderous, standing ovation.
He looked exactly the same as he had eight years ago.
He bowed to the crowd, his sharp eyes scanning the VIP boxes in the upper balcony.
Elena felt her heart completely stop when his gaze locked directly onto hers.
The maestro did not raise his baton to begin the performance.
Instead, Adrian Bell lowered his hands, completely ignoring the confused orchestra.
He stepped off the conductor's podium and began walking straight down the center aisle toward Dante’s private box.
A nervous murmur rippled through the four thousand people in the audience.
"What is he doing?" Dante asked, his body suddenly tense.
Elena could not force a single word past the thick lump in her throat.

The legendary conductor stopped directly below their balcony.
"You have been hiding in the shadows long enough, Elenora," Bell announced loudly, his voice echoing perfectly in the silent hall.
