Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Dante immediately grabbed his highly secure encrypted laptop from the metal desk.

He plugged the tiny flash drive in, and lines of complex code instantly flooded the bright screen.

"It is fully intact," Dante said, his dark eyes wide with genuine shock.

"Every single offshore account, every bribe, every shell company Lorenzo has built for the last thirty years is right here."

Elena gave him a list of complex passwords her father had secretly taught her as a child.

Within twenty minutes, Dante had successfully bypassed all the major security protocols.

"I am completely draining his funds and transferring the money to an untraceable charity," Dante smiled fiercely.

He pressed the final execution key, and they watched Lorenzo's massive empire vanish into absolute nothingness on the screen.

"We did it," Elena breathed out, a massive weight finally lifting from her chest.

Dante closed the laptop and pulled Elena forcefully into his strong arms.

He kissed her passionately, a desperate release of all the terrifying tension they had just survived.

Elena kissed him back, finally allowing herself to feel truly safe for the very first time in eight long years.

Then, Dante's secured cell phone suddenly buzzed loudly on the metal table.

He reluctantly broke the kiss and answered the device on speakerphone.

Lorenzo's dry, raspy chuckle immediately filled the quiet safehouse.

"Did you honestly believe a brilliant criminal like myself would leave all his money in one vulnerable place?" Lorenzo mocked happily.

"That flash drive was a trap I deliberately planted on that old maestro to track your exact location."

The computer screen suddenly flashed violently and turned entirely red, completely wiping Dante's own bank accounts in retaliation.

"I just took everything you own, nephew," Lorenzo laughed cruelly through the speaker.

The laptop screen flickered again, suddenly broadcasting a live video feed of a dark basement.

Elena dropped entirely to her knees as she stared at the woman tied tightly to a wooden chair in the video.

The terrified, frail woman on the screen was wearing the exact same silver watch Elena currently had on her wrist.

Elena realized with absolute horror that her mother had never died in that car crash eight years ago.
