Chapter 7 - The Bad Doctor
Declan aimed his rifle directly at the center of the heavy steel door.
The hydraulic locks disengaged with a heavy thud.
The door slowly swung open, revealing the smoke-filled corridor.
Standing in the doorway with his hands raised was Dr. Malcolm Rearden.
He carried a black leather medical bag and looked absolutely terrified.
Declan did not lower his weapon.
He demanded to know how the doctor got past Kieran's Russian mercenaries.
Rearden stammered that he had hidden in the utility closet when the shooting started.
He claimed the mercenaries had cleared out of the penthouse right after the camera was smashed.
Declan slowly lowered the barrel, trusting the man who had stitched him up for a decade.
Rearden rushed into the room and gasped when he saw Gemma's condition.
He immediately opened his bag and pulled out a series of sterilized tools.
He told Declan that her blood pressure was dropping dangerously low.
Rearden prepared a syringe of clear liquid, claiming it was a coagulant to stabilize her heart.
Declan paced the floor like a caged animal, trying to formulate a plan to raid the pier.
He needed a tactical team, but his own security force had been compromised by Marcus.
He realized he would have to call in a favor from the ruthless Italian families on the south side.
While Declan dialed his satellite phone, Rearden injected the clear fluid into Gemma's IV line.
Gemma let out a soft sigh as the medicine entered her bloodstream.
Declan turned his back for just five seconds to confirm his call.
A sudden, violent choking sound filled the small room.
Declan spun around to see Gemma convulsing violently on the steel table.
Her eyes were rolled back, and thick white foam was gathering at the corners of her mouth.
Declan rushed forward, demanding to know what the doctor had done to her.
Rearden stepped backward, pulling a small silver revolver from his medical bag.
