Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

Gemma tried to sit up, screaming her sister's name at the unfeeling monitor.
Pain ripped through her torn abdomen, forcing her back down onto the metal table.
Declan placed a firm, reassuring hand on her shoulder to keep her from tearing her stitches.
He stared directly at his brother on the screen.
Kieran casually stroked Chloe's hair with the barrel of his silver pistol.
Chloe sobbed quietly, her eyes wide with absolute terror.
Declan promised Kieran that if he hurt the girl, death would be a mercy compared to what he would do to him.
Kieran laughed, noting that Declan always had a flair for dramatic threats.
He explained that faking his own death ten years ago had been the best career move he ever made.
It allowed him to build a shadow army while Declan did all the hard work of organizing the city.
Now, Kieran wanted the keys to the kingdom without firing another shot.
He demanded Declan sign over the legitimate shipping ports that laundered all the family money.
He ordered Declan to bring the physical deed to the abandoned Navy Pier warehouse in exactly sixty minutes.
If Declan was even one minute late, Chloe would be thrown into the river wearing heavy chains.
Kieran shattered the camera with the butt of his gun, instantly cutting the feed to static.
Gemma grabbed Declan's wrist with shocking strength.
She begged him to give his brother whatever he wanted to save Chloe.
Declan gently pulled his arm away and walked toward the weapons locker.
He told her that Kieran was a psychopath who never left loose ends.
Signing the deed would just guarantee both Chloe and Gemma would be executed immediately.
He began loading high-capacity magazines into a tactical vest.
Gemma demanded to know what his actual plan was.
Declan racked the slide of his primary assault rifle with a deafening clack.
He told her they were going to kill his brother.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the panic room hissed loudly.
Someone on the outside had just successfully initiated the emergency override sequence.
