Chapter 9 - The Veteran's Wrath

I didn't shout. I didn't warn him.

I stepped out from the shadows behind him, grabbed his wrist holding the tire iron, pivoted sharply, and applied a brutal wrist-lock. Julian screamed as the iron dropped to the floor with a thud.

Before he could react, I swept his legs out from under him. He crashed onto the hardwood floor, the breath violently expelled from his lungs. I dropped my knee squarely into the center of his spine, pinning him to the ground, and pulled his arms behind his back, securing them with military-grade zip ties.

The entire takedown took less than four seconds.

Julian gasped for air, his face pressed against the floor, absolute terror in his eyes.

"Sarah?!" he choked out, completely baffled. "What... how..."

I leaned down, my voice a deadly whisper near his ear.

"You thought you married into a weak family, Julian," I said coldly. "You thought because I bake pies and tend to a garden, I was helpless. You didn't know that for thirty years, I hunted terrorists for a living. I have broken men ten times your size."

He began to hyperventilate, squirming against the zip ties, but the plastic only cut deeper into his wrists.

"You terrified my daughter. You stole from my granddaughter. And you thought there would be no consequences," I continued, standing up and dialing Brenda's number. "You're not a man, Julian. You're a coward. And cowards don't survive where you're going."
