Chapter 9 - The Surrender

The sheer force of the gunship's artillery strike vaporized the armored vehicle in a blinding flash of fire and twisted metal.
The shockwave knocked El Fantasma and his remaining mercenaries flat onto the cracked concrete.
Before the dust could even settle, dozens of elite military rangers repelled from the helicopters through the shattered roof.
"Hold your fire! Secure the targets!" a ranger captain bellowed through a megaphone.
Laser sights painted the chests of the surviving cartel members, forcing them to drop their weapons immediately.
El Fantasma tried to crawl toward a discarded rifle, but a ranger slammed a combat boot into his back, pinning him down.
I slowly stood up from behind the steel shipping container, my muscles screaming in exhaustion.
Captain Rostova descended the metal stairs of the catwalk, cradling my sleeping baby safely against her chest.
The military medical team rushed into the warehouse, immediately attending to Chloe's gunshot wound and Thomas's electrical burns.
Mark was still lying on the floor, tangled in his broken chair and covered in mud.
A team of federal agents approached him, reading him his Miranda rights for espionage, fraud, and conspiracy.
"Anna, tell them to stop!" Mark pleaded as they hauled him roughly to his feet.
"I am the father of your child! You cannot do this to me!"
I walked over to him, my expression completely stoic and devoid of any remaining affection.
"You lost the right to call yourself a father the moment you traded us for a fake fortune," I said clearly.
The federal agents shoved Mark into the back of an armored transport van, slamming the heavy doors shut.
Major General Thomas was loaded onto a medical stretcher in heavy chains, his military career and life entirely destroyed.
The three-star general who had originally promoted me in the hospital stepped out of a command vehicle.
He surveyed the massive destruction of the shipyard and shook his head in absolute disbelief.
"Colonel Whitmore, you have successfully dismantled a major treason ring and a cartel operation in a single night," the general said.
He handed me a pristine white towel to wipe the blood and soot from my face.
"Your grandfather's legacy is safe, and your twenty million dollar trust is fully secured and uncompromised."
I took my baby from Rostova's arms, feeling the warm, steady beat of his tiny heart against mine.

"Thank you, sir," I whispered, finally letting a genuine smile cross my face.
Everything was finally over, and the nightmare had officially come to an end.
