Chapter 9 - The Cartel Arrives

The cartel enforcers surrounded the bank with military-grade weapons drawn.
They were not here for the money anymore.
They were here to make a bloody example out of Julian and his mother.
Julian dropped the forged marriage certificate and began to sob uncontrollably.
He fell to his knees and actually begged me to save his life.
Victoria tried to hide behind a marble pillar, trembling like a frightened child.
The cartel boss, a massive man with terrible scars, walked through the shattered glass doors.
He ignored me and my father, locking his deadly gaze entirely on Julian.
The boss declared that time was up, and the debt would be paid in blood.
The military commander stood beside my father, waiting for orders.
My father possessed the authority to order his soldiers to eliminate the cartel right now.
He could easily save the man who had humiliated his daughter and poisoned his wife.
Julian crawled toward my father's muddy boots, pleading for military protection.
He promised to be my servant for the rest of his life if we just saved him.
I looked down at the pathetic coward I had almost married.
I felt absolutely nothing for him but pity and disgust.
My father looked at the cartel boss and gave a slow, deliberate nod.
He stated that the military does not interfere in private debt collections among criminals.
My father turned his back on Julian and offered me his arm.
The commander ordered his soldiers to stand down and clear a path.
We walked out of the bank as Julian's terrified screams echoed behind us.
The cartel enforcers dragged Julian and Victoria out through the back alley.
The corrupt police chief was already in federal custody.
The nightmare was finally coming to an end.
We climbed into the military vehicle, leaving the ruined remains of my old life behind.
My father looked out the window and took a deep, peaceful breath.

The military lawyer handed me a secure tablet with a blinking notification.
He told me I needed to see the final asset report immediately.
