Chapter 8 - The Annulment
My father stood in the pouring rain, looking like a legendary warrior from a forgotten era.
He revealed that he had willingly allowed himself to be arrested.
He needed access to the police chief's vehicle to plant a military-grade tracking device.
The tracker had already downloaded every corrupt transaction the chief had made over the past decade.
The police officers lowered their weapons, realizing their boss was going to federal prison.
The corrupt chief fell to his knees in the mud, begging for mercy.
My father ignored him and walked over to my armored SUV.
I hugged him so tightly I thought my ribs would crack.
We drove back to the city to finally end Julian and Victoria's reign of terror.
We arrived at the downtown bank just as Julian was attempting to access the Vance estate funds.
He was screaming at a terrified bank teller, waving the forged marriage certificate.
Victoria stood behind him, nervously checking her diamond-studded watch.
I kicked the glass doors of the bank open and marched inside.
Julian smirked and told me I was too late to stop him.
He bragged that as my legal husband, he had already authorized a massive wire transfer.
I walked right up to him and smiled for the first time all day.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a stamped, verified court document.
I told Julian that I had known about his cheating with his secretary for weeks.
I had secretly filed for a preemptive legal annulment based on fraud before the wedding day even began.
Because I filed it under seal, his corrupt clerk never saw it in the system.
His forged marriage certificate was completely worthless.
Julian looked at the document, and the color drained entirely from his face.
The bank teller announced over the intercom that the wire transfer had been declined.
Victoria let out a horrifying shriek of pure despair.

A convoy of black vans suddenly screeched to a halt outside the bank.
Heavily armed members of the ruthless cartel poured out of the vehicles.
