Chapter 7 - The Legal Trap

I stared at the glowing screen in absolute horror.

Julian had filed the marriage paperwork early using a corrupt contact at the clerk's office.

Even though the ceremony was canceled, the state recognized us as legally married.

This meant Julian had immediate legal access to half of any fortune I inherited.

He was planning to use my father's military billions to pay off his cartel debts.

I slammed my fists onto the desk in frustration.

The military lawyer adjusted his glasses and looked at the forged document.

He stated that proving forgery would take months in a civilian court.

By that time, Julian would have already drained the accounts and fled the country.

I paced around the safe house, my mind racing with desperate ideas.

The commander received a secure message on his radio and cursed under his breath.

He announced that the local police were transferring my father to a maximum-security state prison.

Once he was inside the state system, getting him out would be nearly impossible.

We had to intercept the transport convoy before it reached the county line.

I refused to let the soldiers go without me.

I strapped on a bulletproof vest over my ruined, dirty wedding dress.

We piled into the armored military SUVs and sped onto the highway.

The rain began to pour, slicking the roads and reducing visibility to zero.

We caught up to the police convoy just as they were crossing a narrow bridge.

The military vehicles boxed in the corrupt police cruisers, forcing them to a halt.

The commander stepped out into the pouring rain with a megaphone.

He ordered the police chief to release General Vance immediately.

The police chief laughed over his own loudspeaker and refused to comply.

Suddenly, the back doors of the police van blew open with a deafening explosion.

My father stepped out of the smoke, holding the keys to his own handcuffs.

He threw the keys onto the wet pavement and revealed a dark secret of his own.
