Chapter 9 - The Reckoning
I froze in the middle of the corridor, staring down the dark, terrifying barrel of the weapon held by my former best friend.
"Harper, please, you do not have to do this for them," I pleaded, holding my hands up slowly in surrender.
Harper’s hand shook violently, her eyes welling with thick, desperate tears as she kept the gun pointed directly at me.
"Julian threatened to ruin my parents' lives if I didn't help them secure the company," she sobbed, her tough facade finally breaking.
"If you shoot me, you will be a murderer, Harper, and Julian will just betray you anyway," I reasoned calmly, taking a slow step forward.
Harper lowered the weapon slightly, completely torn between her terrible fear of Julian and the remaining shred of our friendship.
"Victoria is in the boardroom right now, finalizing the transfer, you only have five minutes left," Harper whispered, completely dropping the gun to the floor.
I didn't hesitate, grabbing her hand tightly and running directly toward the massive, double oak doors of the boardroom.
I slammed the heavy doors open, interrupting Victoria as she stood victoriously at the head of the long mahogany table.
"This company does not belong to you, Victoria, it belongs to my family," I shouted, marching straight toward the digital presentation console.
Julian lunged forward to stop me, but Harper bravely stepped into his path, tackling him heavily into a row of leather chairs.
I slammed the micro-SD card into the console, quickly bypassing the security screen with the access codes Nathan had taught me.
The massive digital projector immediately illuminated, displaying the undeniable, original patents bearing my father's forged signature.
The screen then automatically cycled to Julian's hidden bank accounts, showing the exact money trail he used to fake his death and frame Nathan.
The entire board of directors erupted in absolute chaos, shouting aggressively and demanding immediate answers from the trapped conspirators.
Within minutes, corporate security flooded the room, detaining Victoria as she screamed bitter curses at me.
Julian managed to break free in the confusion, slipping out the private executive exit and vanishing completely into the city.
An hour later, the police officially cleared all false charges against Nathan, releasing him entirely from the federal detention center.
I stood in the devastated boardroom, completely exhausted, waiting nervously for the man who had secretly loved me for a decade.

When Nathan finally walked through the doors, he looked at me with immense pride, but the board chairman immediately stood up to intercept him.
"You are cleared of the criminal charges, Nathan, but this massive scandal has destroyed public trust, and we demand your immediate resignation as CEO."
