Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

I stared at Harper, completely unable to process the cruel betrayal radiating from her cold eyes.
"You were the only person who knew my secret, how could you sell me out to her?" I demanded, my voice breaking.
"You were always so naive, Maya, waiting for fairy tales while the rest of us actually struggled to survive," Harper scoffed.
She turned around and walked out, leaving me and Nathan standing in absolute, stunned silence.
"We need to move the server backups immediately before Victoria locks us out of the entire system," Nathan ordered quickly.
We sprinted down the hallway toward the private elevator, knowing every single second was now absolutely critical.
We descended to the underground sub-level, a restricted area that housed the company's most sensitive data frames.
The heavy steel door to the server room was already hanging wide open when we finally arrived.
"Stay behind me," Nathan warned, pulling a heavy metal flashlight from the emergency emergency wall kit.
We crept into the freezing, dimly lit room, scanning the aisles of blinking, humming server racks.
Standing at the main terminal was a tall man in a dark hoodie, frantically downloading files onto an external drive.
"Step away from the console right now," Nathan commanded, aiming the heavy flashlight like a weapon.
The man slowly finished the download, unplugged the drive, and turned around to face us.
When the beam of light hit his face, Nathan dropped the flashlight, the heavy metal clattering loudly against the concrete floor.
"That is impossible," Nathan whispered, all the color instantly draining from his terrified face.
The man smiled, a twisted, sinister expression that looked exactly like Nathan's own features.
"Hello, little brother, it has been a very long time," the man said smoothly.
I looked back and forth between them, realizing this was Julian Carter, the brother who had supposedly died in a plane crash three years ago.

Before either of us could react, the server room doors slammed shut, locking us securely inside.
"Victoria and I make a great team, Nathan, and we are officially taking the company back tonight," Julian laughed through the intercom.
