Chapter 7 - The Shadow Contract

I sat frozen in the passenger seat of Natalie's stolen sedan, staring at the woman I had known for ten years.
Everything about her posture, her tone, and her physical demeanor was completely foreign to me.
She drove the car with intense, tactical focus, constantly checking all the mirrors for potential tails.
I loudly demanded that she tell me the absolute truth immediately, or I was going to jump out of the moving vehicle.
Natalie locked all the doors with a sharp, echoing electronic click.
She calmly confessed that she was a private investigator, hired exactly five years ago by my late father.
My father had deeply suspected Daniel was a massive fraud long before he passed away from cancer.
He had secretly paid Natalie a massive retainer to infiltrate my life and protect me if Daniel ever showed his true, violent colors.
I felt physically sick to my stomach, realizing my entire adult support system was built on a calculated lie.
The loyal best friend who had held my hand during my miscarriage was apparently just fulfilling a financial contract.
I angrily asked her why she didn't just tell me the truth from the very beginning.
Natalie plainly stated that I would never have believed her without concrete, undeniable proof.
Daniel was simply too good at playing the role of the perfect, loving husband.
She completely shattered my reality by admitting she had orchestrated the entire discovery of the affair.
She was the one who purposefully left Daniel's laptop open in the bathroom so I would see Claire's damning message.
She needed me to leave him willingly so she could extract me safely before he finally executed his plan to frame me for the embezzlement.
I pressed my shaking hands against my face, trying desperately to process the sheer scale of the manipulation.
I asked her what our plan was now that Claire had successfully stolen the master ledger.
Natalie pulled the stolen car into a dark subterranean parking garage beneath a massive commercial skyscraper.
She smiled faintly and said Claire and the stolen ledger didn't matter anymore.
The book in the country club vault was a complete fake, planted by Natalie weeks ago to purposefully distract Daniel's team.
Natalie popped the trunk of the car and pulled out a heavy, military-grade metal lockbox.
She opened it, revealing a sleek, highly encrypted solid-state hard drive.
This was the real master file, containing every single digital footprint of Daniel's countless crimes.
Natalie handed it to me gently, saying it was finally time to utterly destroy my husband.
I held the cold metal drive, feeling a sudden surge of vengeful, absolute power.
But as I looked down at the empty lockbox in the trunk, I noticed a folded piece of paper caught under the foam lining.
I pulled it out quietly while Natalie was busy checking the perimeter of the dark garage.
It was a standard bank transfer receipt with Natalie's real, full legal name printed on it.
The completed transfer was for exactly two hundred and forty thousand dollars.
It was the precise amount of money Daniel had initially stolen from our joint marital account.

Natalie hadn't been hired by my loving father to protect me.
She had been hired directly by Daniel.
