Chapter 5 - The Country Club Vault

I stared at my mother's irreplaceable ring, a wave of profound nausea washing over me.
Daniel hadn't just given Claire a massive bribe to keep her mouth shut.
He had given her a piece of my personal heritage, mocking me even in my absolute absence.
I snatched the ring from her palm, my vision blurring with an intense, blinding rage.
Claire flinched violently, swearing she had no idea it actually belonged to my family.
I didn't have the time or energy to argue about stolen jewelry right now.
We hailed a passing taxi and directed the driver to the prestigious Oakwood Country Club.
I used Claire's stolen VIP card to confidently bypass the front desk, keeping my head down to avoid the cameras.
We took the private, wood-paneled elevator down to the basement, where the ultra-secure member lockboxes were kept.
The silent room was lined with polished brass doors and smelled faintly of expensive cigar smoke.
Claire punched a complex four-digit code into the electronic keypad of box number forty-two.
The heavy metal door clicked open with a soft, satisfying mechanical sound.
Inside rested a black leather-bound journal and a small black velvet pouch.
I grabbed the journal and quickly flipped through the thick, yellowed pages.
It was a meticulous handwritten ledger, detailing every illegal transfer, every bribe, and every fake vendor Daniel had created.
This book was the ultimate holy grail.
This was more than enough evidence to send Daniel to federal prison for the rest of his miserable life.
I felt a genuine, triumphant smile spread across my exhausted face.
I turned to Claire and told her we finally had the leverage we needed to survive this nightmare.
She didn't answer me.
I fully turned around, expecting to see her looking just as relieved as I felt.
Instead, Claire was holding a small silver pistol, aiming it directly at my chest.
Her tear-stained, panicked expression from this morning was completely gone.
Her face was now entirely blank, completely devoid of any human emotion.
She calmly reached out and snatched the black ledger right out of my frozen hands.
She told me I really was exactly as naive and pathetic as Daniel always claimed I was.
She hadn't come to the motel to warn me about a hitman.
She had hired the hitman herself, and she had only used me to bypass the secondary biometric lock on the vault that Daniel had set to my fingerprints.
Before I could even process this massive betrayal, the heavy basement door swung open.

Two large men in dark suits stepped into the quiet room, completely blocking my only exit.
Claire smiled warmly at them and casually ordered them to make my death look like a tragic suicide.
