Chapter 10 - The Mastermind's Web

Daniel collapsed weakly onto the dusty concrete floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder in apparent agony.

I stood completely frozen, gripping the iron bar tightly, unable to comprehend how he had found me here.

He choked on his own blood, frantically telling me that Rebecca had violently betrayed him.

He confessed everything to me in a rapid, panic-stricken rush of words.

Rebecca had orchestrated the entire massive embezzlement scheme, using her vast legal expertise to create the untraceable offshore accounts.

She had intentionally manipulated Daniel into having the affair with Claire to create a perfect, messy distraction for the authorities.

When Daniel finally realized Rebecca was planning to steal the money and kill him, he had faked the footage of himself in our living room to buy precious time.

He claimed he had tracked Natalie's car to this building to save me, knowing I was the only person who could legally unlock the master drive.

Daniel pulled a small silver flash drive from his torn pocket and slid it across the dusty floor to me.

He swore to God it contained Rebecca's original emails, audio recordings of her ordering Claire's murder, and the undeniable proof of my complete innocence.

I picked up the flash drive cautiously, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

I plugged it directly into my laptop alongside the master drive.

Daniel was actually telling the absolute truth.

There were dozens of crystal-clear recordings of Rebecca detailing her exact plan to meticulously frame me and murder him.

I quickly forwarded the entire cache of files to the FBI tip line, the local police captain, and three major national news outlets.

I felt a massive, overwhelming weight finally lift off my tired shoulders.

I had actually done it.

I had successfully cleared my name, exposed the real criminal mastermind, and survived the most terrifying night of my entire life.

Daniel looked up at me with genuine tears in his eyes, whispering a beautiful, heartbreaking apology for everything he had done to our marriage.

Sirens began to wail loudly in the distance, growing louder as dozens of police cars surrounded the base of the building.

I sat back against the drywall, taking a deep breath of sweet relief as I slowly closed my laptop.

I had finally won the war.

But as I glanced down at Daniel, a strange, bright notification popped up on his abandoned cell phone resting on the floor.

It was an automated security message from the offshore banking application.

Biometric authorization accepted, and four million dollars has been successfully transferred to the final destination account.

I frowned in deep confusion, realizing I hadn't authorized any financial transfer on my laptop.

Daniel suddenly stopped coughing.

The terrified, pathetic, and broken look completely vanished from his handsome face in a split second.

It was instantly replaced by a cold, calculating, and incredibly triumphant smirk.

He stood up gracefully, casually wiping the fake theatrical blood from his perfectly uninjured shoulder.

He looked down at me and softly said that Rebecca was a brilliant lawyer, but she was a terrible, naive partner.

He thanked me warmly for unlocking the drive with my thumbprint, which was the absolute final step he needed to bypass the bank's security and access the funds.

Before I could even open my mouth to scream, the heavy construction doors burst open with a crash.

Five heavily armed men walked into the room wearing dark tactical gear, but they definitely weren't the police.

They were led by a smiling Natalie, who looked lovingly at Daniel and asked what he wanted to do with his wife now that they were officially billionaires.

Daniel adjusted his expensive silk tie, casually stepping over my closed laptop.

He coldly ordered them to bury me deep inside the foundation of the new building because they were going on a permanent, luxurious vacation.

And as the armed men aggressively dragged me toward the open, pitch-black elevator shaft, Daniel and Natalie turned their backs and happily walked away together.
