Chapter 8 - The Airport Chase

My hands gripped the steering wheel desperately, fighting to regain control of the spinning car.

We crashed through the metal guardrail, tearing the front bumper completely off the frame.

The car slid sideways through the muddy ditch, violently slamming into a thick oak tree before finally stopping.

The airbags deployed with a deafening pop, filling the cabin with a cloud of white powder.

I pushed the deflated airbag aside and looked over at Maria, who was bruised but conscious.

"Are you okay?" I asked frantically.

She nodded weakly, rubbing a massive welt forming on her forehead.

I looked up at the highway and saw the black SUV slowly backing up, preparing to ram us again.

I threw my car into reverse, ignoring the horrible grinding sound of the twisted metal engine.

The tires spun in the thick mud before finally catching traction on a patch of exposed gravel.

I floored the accelerator, launching my damaged car back up the embankment just as the SUV charged forward.

The armored truck completely missed us and plunged over the edge of the embankment, getting hopelessly stuck in the ditch.

I didn't stop to look back, pushing my ruined, smoking car down the final stretch of Route 9.

We approached the tall wire gates of the private airfield, which were locked with a heavy chain.

I didn't even touch the brakes as we smashed directly through the center of the metal gates.

The car skidded to a halt on the dark tarmac, completely destroying the engine in a cloud of thick black smoke.

A sleek, white private jet was idling at the far end of the runway, its jet engines screaming loudly.

The boarding stairs were lowered, and Vanessa was casually walking up the steps.

She was holding Lily tightly in one arm while carrying a silver briefcase in the other.
