Chapter 3 - The Bloodline

The sterile smell of the hospital emergency room did nothing to calm my racing nerves.
I sat in the uncomfortable plastic chair while the pediatric team ran a full physical examination on Lily.
After an agonizing hour, the head doctor walked out and offered me a reassuring smile.
"Your daughter is going to be perfectly fine, Mr. Carter," he told me.
"She has a small bruise on her shoulder, but the thick carpet prevented any serious head trauma."
I breathed a massive sigh of relief and held my sleeping baby tightly against my chest.
But the relief was quickly overshadowed by the dark secret I had uncovered in the burned files.
I immediately drove to a private genetic testing facility on the other side of the city.
I paid an exorbitant fee to have a rush DNA test performed using a swab from Lily's cheek and my own saliva.
I spent the next forty-eight hours pacing the floors of my empty house, waiting for the results.
When the secured email finally arrived in my inbox, my hands shook as I clicked the attachment.
The first line of the document confirmed that I was, without a doubt, Lily's biological father.
I let out a breath I did not know I was holding.
But the second page of the genetic report contained a shocking anomaly.
The lab had cross-referenced Lily's DNA with a database to identify maternal traits.
Vanessa was completely excluded as the biological mother, sharing zero genetic markers with my child.
I printed the documents and carried them into the kitchen where Maria was preparing a bottle.
I placed the burned birth certificate and the DNA results on the granite counter.
"Maria, you have to tell me what you know about Vanessa," I demanded gently.
Maria looked down at the papers, and the color completely drained from her weathered face.
Tears instantly welled up in her dark eyes, and she collapsed into a kitchen chair.
"I didn't want to believe it was true," Maria sobbed, covering her face with her hands.

"The baby's real mother is a woman named Elena," Maria whispered through her tears.
"And Elena was my beautiful daughter who supposedly died in a car crash eight months ago."
