Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Past

I stared at Maria in absolute shock, unable to process the impossible words she had just spoken.

Elena had been my college girlfriend, a brilliant and kind woman I loved deeply before we drifted apart.

"I was told Elena died instantly when a drunk driver hit her car on the interstate," I said, my voice shaking.

Maria wiped her tears and looked up at me with a profound sadness in her eyes.

"Vanessa was the one who called me from the hospital that night," Maria explained.

"Vanessa was Elena's best friend, and she claimed she was in the passenger seat during the crash."

The sickening pieces of a massive, twisted puzzle finally began falling into place.

Vanessa had faked her own pregnancy while I was away on a massive six-month corporate expansion in Europe.

She had somehow engineered Elena's fatal accident, stolen the newborn baby, and forged the hospital documents.

Vanessa had orchestrated an elaborate lie just to secure her place in my wealthy family.

I realized with terrifying clarity that I had married a calculated, cold-blooded murderer.

"We have to take this to the police immediately," I told Maria, grabbing my car keys.

Before we could even reach the front door, the heavy oak panels vibrated with a loud series of knocks.

I pulled open the door, expecting to see the local detectives who had arrested my wife.

Instead, Vanessa was standing on my front porch, wearing a sharp designer suit and a smug smile.

She was flanked by two massive, armed private security guards and a man in a cheap gray suit.

"How are you out of jail?" I demanded, stepping forward to block the entrance.

"I have excellent lawyers, Ethan, and a very sympathetic judge," she replied coldly.

The man in the gray suit stepped forward and flashed a silver badge.

"I am with Child Protective Services, Mr. Carter," the man said in a monotone voice.

He handed me a thick stack of official court documents bearing a judge's signature.

"We have received credible allegations that you are violently unstable and a danger to your infant."

Vanessa smiled triumphantly as the fake social worker reached out his hands toward my daughter.
