Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Past

I stared at the ghost of my father, my gun trembling slightly in my hand for the first time in my life.
Carlo Romano looked older, his face lined with deep wrinkles, but his eyes were just as ruthless as I remembered.
He aggressively ordered us to get into the vehicle if we wanted to survive the night.
I kept my weapon aimed directly at his head, demanding to know how he was still alive.
Carlo sighed, annoyed by my hesitation, and explained that faking his death was the only way to avoid a federal indictment.
He had been running the entire Romano crime family from the shadows while letting me act as the public target.
He claimed that Dante was working for him, and the attack on my house was a necessary purge.
I felt a surge of absolute, sickening betrayal burning through my veins.
I asked him if he was the one who ordered the hit on Isabelle.
Carlo did not even have the decency to look ashamed when he nodded his head.
He coldly stated that Isabelle had discovered his secret existence and was planning to turn his financial records over to the FBI.
He told me that collateral damage was simply the tragic price of doing business.
A fierce, blinding rage completely consumed my soul.
I raised my gun to execute the man who had murdered my wife and destroyed my daughters' lives.
Before I could pull the trigger, the rear doors of the SUV swung open violently.
Four heavily armed mercenaries stepped out, leveling automatic rifles at Grace and my children.
Carlo smiled a wicked, terrifying smile.
He told me to drop my weapon, or he would order his men to finish the job they started at the preschool.

He stated that the girls had seen too much and could no longer be trusted to keep the family secrets.
I realized with absolute horror that my own father had come here to execute his grandchildren.
