Chapter 2 - The Underboss

I did not hesitate for a single second.

I fired a warning shot that shattered the expensive crystal vase inches from Dante's head.

The deafening sound of the gunshot echoed terribly through the massive mansion.

My three daughters screamed, covering their ears in absolute terror.

Dante flinched but quickly pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket.

He told me that I was a fool to think I could rule New York forever.

He claimed that the other syndicate families were tired of my endless, bloody crusade for a dead woman.

I yelled at Grace to get the girls down into the basement immediately.

She did not freeze in panic like a normal civilian would.

She scooped Nora into her arms and grabbed Olivia and Sophie by their hands.

She sprinted toward the kitchen pantry, moving with shocking, tactical precision.

I laid down covering fire, forcing Dante to retreat behind the heavy oak pillars in the hallway.

I backed into the kitchen, keeping my weapon raised.

I hit the emergency lockdown button hidden beneath the granite countertop.

Heavy steel blast doors instantly slammed down over all the windows and exterior exits.

The entire mansion was plunged into emergency red lighting.

I turned to follow Grace into the pantry where the basement stairs were located.

But the heavy wooden door was already locked from the inside.

I pounded on the wood, shouting for Grace to open it.

A cold, unfamiliar voice echoed through the kitchen intercom system above my head.

The voice told me that the housekeeper did not work for me, and she never had.
