Chapter 6 - THE ARREST

The Oakhaven County Sheriff, accompanied by two federal agents, breached the hallway.
Marcus tried to run, shoving his own mother out of the way to reach the back door. A deputy tackled him into the drywall before he made it three steps.
"Get off me! She's crazy! She invited us here!" Marcus screamed, his face pressed against the dusty floorboards.
Eleanor was screeching, wildly waving her expensive leather handbag at the officers. "Do you know who I am? We are the Thornes! You cannot arrest us in this filthy shack!"
"Eleanor Thorne," a federal agent said, snapping handcuffs onto her wrists. "You're under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and accessory to grand larceny."
I stood up slowly, leaning on my crutch. I walked over to where Marcus was being hauled to his feet. He looked pathetic. His designer clothes were covered in dust, his face bruised from the tackle.
"You ruined my life," he spat, glaring at me with pure venom.
"No, Marcus," I replied, looking him dead in the eye. "I just survived it."
As they dragged him out to the cruisers, Emma crept out of her bedroom, clutching her stuffed bear. She looked at the flashing lights, then up at me.

"Are the bad guys gone, Mommy?" she asked.
I pulled her into my side, resting my chin on her soft hair. "Yes, baby. The bad guys are gone for good."
