Chapter 1 - THE VEIL LIFTS

The rain lashed against the porch as I stood frozen, the words of my dead father burning into my retinas.
Sarah, if you are holding this letter, then Marcus has finally revealed his true colors—and I am so deeply sorry I wasn't alive to protect you from him.
My hands trembled so violently that Mr. Henderson had to gently guide me and Emma inside the old, dusty farmhouse. He flicked on a solitary lamp in the living room. The place smelled of old pine and forgotten memories, but right now, it was our only fortress.
I sat Emma on the faded floral sofa and wrapped her in my dry military jacket before returning to the letter.
I knew you loved him, the letter continued. But while you were deployed, Marcus made a fatal error. He thought I was just a senile old man. He didn't know I still had friends at the local bank. He's been bleeding you dry, waiting for you to die overseas so he could collect the massive life insurance policy he secretly took out on you.
A sickening wave of betrayal washed over me. The pain in my shattered leg was nothing compared to the agony in my chest.
Look beneath the floorboards in my old study, the letter concluded. I left you everything you need to destroy him. Do not let him win, my brave girl.
I looked up. Emma was watching me, her wide eyes reflecting the dim lamplight. She hadn't spoken since Marcus threw us out.

"Mommy?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "Are we going back?"
I folded the letter, a cold, unfamiliar fire igniting in my veins. "No, baby. We aren't going back. We're going to war."
