Chapter 10 - THE SANCTUARY

One year later.
The Oakhaven farmhouse was unrecognizable. With the recovered funds, I had hired local contractors to restore it to its former glory. The sagging roof was replaced with sturdy tin. The warped porch was now expansive, wrapped in solid cedar and painted a brilliant, welcoming white.
It was a crisp, golden autumn afternoon.
I stood on the porch, leaning against the railing. No cane. No crutches. My leg still ached when it rained, and I would never run a marathon again, but I was strong. I was standing on my own two feet, on my own land.
Mr. Henderson walked across the lawn, carrying a basket of fresh apples from his orchard.
"Looking good, Sarah!" he called out, tipping his hat.
"Thanks, Thomas. Join us for dinner tonight. I'm making a roast."
"Wouldn't miss it."
The screen door banged open behind me. Emma ran out, laughing brightly. She was eight years old now, her cheeks rosy and her eyes full of light. The shadows that had haunted her in Marcus's house were entirely gone.
She ran past me, chasing a stray butterfly across the front lawn.
I took a deep breath, letting the clean country air fill my lungs. I had gone to war across the globe, only to fight my hardest battle inside my own home. But the war was over. The enemy was vanquished.

I looked up at the endless blue sky, sending a silent thank you to the father who had guarded me from beyond the grave.
We weren't just surviving anymore. We were home.
