Chapter 8 - The Falling Sky

The sudden intensity of the spotlight paralyzed everyone on the roof for a crucial, silent second.
The side doors of the black helicopter slid open, revealing a heavily armed strike team aiming weapons down at us.
I quickly pushed Chloe and Lily behind a large steel air conditioning unit, shielding them with my own body.
The Mayor laughed triumphantly, shouting that his backup had finally arrived to clean up the mess.
He waved the flash drive in the air, signaling the helicopter to land and secure his extraction.
The chopper hovered dangerously close, its massive rotors kicking up a blinding storm of gravel and dust.
I knew that if that helicopter touched down, we were all going to die on this roof.
I scanned our surroundings frantically, my eyes landing on a bright red emergency fire box bolted to the access stairwell.
I sprinted from cover, diving across the open gravel as a hail of bullets tore through the air where I had just been standing.
I smashed the glass of the emergency box with my elbow, ignoring the sharp pain of the shards cutting my skin.
I grabbed the heavy, orange flare gun inside, praying the ancient plastic shell wasn't expired.
I rolled onto my back just as one of the Mayor's mercenaries lined up a perfect shot at my head.
I aimed the flare gun directly at the helicopter's exposed tail rotor and pulled the heavy trigger.
A blinding red streak shot across the sky, lodging directly into the delicate mechanics of the rear blade.
The flare exploded in a shower of sparks, instantly seizing the rotor and throwing the massive aircraft off balance.
The helicopter began to spin violently out of control, the pilots screaming over the loudspeaker as they lost altitude.
The Mayor watched in absolute horror as his only escape route turned into a massive, deadly projectile.

The spinning metal beast slammed violently onto the opposite end of the roof, erupting into a towering fireball.
A massive piece of flaming debris shot across the concrete, striking the Mayor directly in the chest and knocking him backward over the ledge.
