Chapter 2 - The Escape

I dropped to the concrete just as a bullet shattered the window of the car behind me.
Adrenaline flooded my system as I scrambled backward, clutching the screaming little girl tightly against my chest.
I crawled desperately behind a row of parked cars, praying the metal would stop their bullets.
Heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel, closing in on my position with terrifying speed.
I reached my own car, a beat-up sedan that suddenly felt like my only lifeline.
I fumbled with my keys, my hands shaking so violently I almost dropped them.
I threw the passenger door open, buckled the child into the seat with trembling fingers, and threw myself behind the wheel.
The man in the suit rounded the corner just as I slammed the gas pedal to the floor.
The engine roared to life, and the front bumper clipped him, sending him tumbling onto the hot asphalt.
I tore out of the parking lot, my tires squealing as I merged recklessly into oncoming traffic.
I checked my rearview mirror and saw the black SUV aggressively weaving through cars to catch up.
I took a sharp right turn down a narrow alleyway, knocking over trash cans to create an obstacle.
The SUV smashed through the debris, unrelenting in its pursuit.
I knew I couldn't outrun a high-powered vehicle in my old sedan.
I spotted a crowded underground parking garage ahead and dove into the entrance, barely grabbing a ticket.
I parked in the darkest corner I could find and killed the engine.
The little girl was sobbing quietly, so I reached into her small pink coat to find a tissue.
My fingers brushed against a thick, folded piece of parchment paper hidden deep inside the lining.
I pulled it out and read a hastily scribbled address and a single, chilling sentence.
It read that if they found me, the police were already bought, and I had to find the gray door.

A sudden, rhythmic beeping sound echoed from beneath my own dashboard.
I crawled under the steering wheel and found a military-grade tracking device blinking red.
