Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

The dark figure crashed through the shattered window frame in a shower of broken glass.

It was my eldest brother, the United States Senator, wearing full tactical combat gear.

He grabbed Chloe by the throat and pinned her brutally to the hallway floor.

The knife slipped from her hand and skittered uselessly away into the darkness.

I lunged forward and snatched Sophia into my arms, holding her so tightly my muscles ached.

The mercenary waiter tried to raise his weapon, but Victor shot him cleanly in the shoulder.

Elena realized her flawless master plan had completely disintegrated into absolute chaos.

She abandoned her son and sprinted frantically toward the emergency stairwell.

Victor calmly adjusted his weapon and prepared to chase her down into the darkness.

My eldest brother stood up, brushing shards of glass from his heavily armored vest.

He looked at me with a warm, comforting smile that contradicted the extreme violence of the room.

He apologized for missing dinner and promised to buy Sophia the biggest ice cream cone in the city.

Sophia sniffled and bravely held up her crumpled paper necklace.

She asked if her uncle wanted to wear it since Daddy was a bad man.

My brother knelt down and proudly let her place the glittery paper around his thick neck.

I hugged him fiercely, thanking God that my family was finally reunited and safe.

Victor returned from the stairwell a few minutes later, dragging a cursing Elena by her expensive hair.

The federal agents rushed onto the floor and immediately took custody of the criminals.

The nightmare was finally coming to a rapid and decisive end.

I carried Sophia down to the lobby, stepping over the ruins of Dominic's shattered empire.

We walked out into the cool, refreshing night air of the city.

The police lights flashed against the wet pavement like a twisted disco ball.

I thought about the divorce papers I was going to file first thing in the morning.

I was finally free to live my life without hiding my true identity or my immense power.

Suddenly, a sleek black limousine pulled up directly to the curb in front of us.

The tinted window slowly rolled down, revealing the face of my second brother, the banking mogul.

He did not look relieved or happy to see that we had survived the ordeal.

He looked at me with cold, dead eyes and aimed a silver pistol directly at my chest.
