Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The chime of the heavy oak door echoed through the cavernous foyer of my penthouse.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the city lights blur behind my reflection.

On the mahogany console table, my phone lit up for the hundred and fifty-third time.

Daniel’s name flashed across the dark glass screen.

I did not move to pick it up.

Instead, I tapped the security monitor on the wall, bringing up the high-definition feed from the private elevator landing.

Daniel was standing on the welcome mat, his tailored Italian jacket rumpled and his hair disheveled.

The man who had just kissed another woman under a silver banner looked completely coming undone.

Behind him stood two armed men in matching navy blazers bearing the corporate insignia of Whitmore Dynamics.

He was not alone.

He hammered his fist against the reinforced mahogany panel.

"Claire, open this damn door right now," Daniel shouted through the intercom.

His voice was strained, stripped of the smooth charm he used on investors.

"You froze the corporate disbursement accounts," he yelled, his face pressed toward the camera lens.

"Payroll clears at midnight, Claire."

"If those funds don’t move, the entire acquisitions department shuts down by morning."

I pressed the intercom button on the wall.

My voice sounded steady, chilling even to my own ears.

"You should ask your fiancée to cover the payroll, Daniel."

Daniel flinched as if I had struck him across the face.

"Claire, stop playing games," he begged, lowering his tone into a frantic whisper.

"Vanessa and I are in the middle of closing a landmark institutional buy-in."

"Whatever you think you saw at the office was strictly theatrical."

"It was a publicity stunt to satisfy the European board members."

"Ten years together, Claire."

"You know I love you."

I stared at his desperate expression on the screen.

Ten years of marriage, and he still believed I was the naive heiress who lived only to please him.

"You gave her my mother’s vintage teardrop diamond," I whispered.

"I found the empty velvet box in your bedside drawer last Tuesday."

Daniel froze, the blood instantly draining from his cheeks.

He opened his mouth to stammer an excuse, but the elevator doors behind him chimed softly.

A woman in a sharp scarlet blazer stepped out onto the landing, her stilettos clicking sharply against the polished granite.

Vanessa Cole did not look distressed.

She smiled coldly at the security camera and held up a manila folder bearing an official crimson seal.

"Save your breath, Daniel," Vanessa said, pushing him aside with one manicured hand.

"Your wife doesn't own those shares anymore."
