Chapter 6 - The Ghost's Ledger

I watched in stunned silence as a figure descended the metal stairs from the catwalk.
It was Rachel Bennett, Emma's mother.
She was dressed in dark tactical gear and held a heavy military-grade sniper rifle in her hands.
She didn't look like a terrified hotel housekeeper who had gone into hiding.
She looked like a highly trained operative who had been waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
"Mom!" Emma cried out, tears finally breaking through her brave facade.
Victor drew his sidearm in a panic, but I was faster.
I fired a single round, shooting the gun directly out of his trembling hand.
He fell to his knees, clutching his shattered, bleeding fingers.
I rushed forward and quickly cut Emma loose from the suspended wooden chair.
She practically leaped into her mother's arms.
"I thought you were dead," I said to Rachel, keeping my gun trained on the bleeding traitor.
"I had to disappear so Victor would lower his guard," Rachel explained, hugging her daughter tightly.
"I knew he was working for the Santiago Cartel."
She reached into her tactical vest and pulled out a small, heavy black metal flash drive.
"This is the real ledger, Grant," she said, tossing it to me.
"It contains every bank account, every corrupt politician, and every bribe the cartel ever paid."
I caught the cold metal drive, realizing this was the ultimate weapon to destroy my enemies.
Suddenly, the massive steel doors of the warehouse were violently ripped off their hinges by an armored truck.
Blinding tactical headlights flooded the warehouse as dozens of armed cartel soldiers poured into the building.

We were completely surrounded, and Victor began to laugh hysterically from the floor.
"You have the ledger, Grant," Victor spat out, "but you aren't leaving this building alive to use it."
