Chapter 5 - The Innocent Trigger

I slowly lowered my weapon, refusing to break eye contact with my former friend.
"Why go through all of this, Victor?" I asked, trying to buy time to close the distance.
"You stole millions from the hotel, but this isn't just about money anymore."
Victor took a long drag from his cigar and blew the smoke into the damp warehouse air.
"It was never about the hotel, Grant," he confessed bitterly.
"The cartel offered me a seat at the high table if I handed them your territory."
He was attempting a full hostile takeover of my entire criminal empire.
"The stolen funds were used to pay off the local police, the judges, and your own bodyguards," he revealed.
He tightened his grip on the heavy iron lever that held Emma suspended above the acid.
"You have no empire left, Grant."
Emma looked down at me, her young face pale but surprisingly defiant.
"I told you they were stealing from you," she whispered bravely.
Victor sneered and prepared to pull the heavy lever backward.
"Time to say goodbye, little girl," he hissed.
Suddenly, a massive wooden shipping crate above us shattered violently.
A sniper's bullet tore through the air and struck the metal mechanism of the lever.
Sparks flew as the rusted gears jammed entirely, locking the suspended chair safely in place.
Victor stumbled backward, staring in absolute shock at his ruined execution device.
"Who fired that shot?" he screamed into the cavernous darkness.

From the high metal catwalks, a woman's voice echoed through the cold warehouse.
"A mother protecting her cub."
