Chapter 6 - The Confession Tape

I stared at the glowing screen of the burner phone until my eyes burned.
Lauren had intentionally orchestrated her own catastrophic car accident.
She had paid someone to smash a heavy truck into her side of the vehicle just to fake a lifelong injury.
The pure, calculated insanity of her plan sent a violent chill down my spine.
She had spent four entire months pretending to be a helpless, paralyzed victim.
She had watched me drown in absolute guilt every single day, knowing it was all a lie.
I pocketed the burner phone, realizing this was my only piece of hard evidence.
If I gave this phone to Detective Vance, I could prove my wife was a criminal mastermind.
But as I turned to leave the guest room, a sudden noise stopped me dead in my tracks.
It was the distinct sound of a floorboard creaking in the hallway just outside the door.
I held my breath and pressed my back tightly against the wall.
The police officer stationed outside must have heard me break the garage window.
The doorknob turned slowly, and the door swung open into the dark room.
A tall figure stepped inside, holding a small tactical flashlight.
It was not a uniformed police officer.
It was David, my brother-in-law.
He swept the flashlight across the room, the beam stopping directly on my face.
"I knew you would come back here," David whispered, stepping inside and locking the door.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a black, suppressed handgun.
"What are you doing, David?" I asked, raising my hands slowly in surrender.
"You need to pay for what you did to my sister," David said, pointing the gun at my chest.
"I didn't do anything to her, David, she is framing me," I pleaded quietly.
I slowly reached into my pocket and pulled out the burner phone.
"Look at this phone," I urged him. "Lauren faked the car crash."
David did not even glance at the glowing screen in my hand.
He smiled a sad, pathetic smile.

"I know she faked the crash, Marcus," David replied softly.
"Because I was the one driving the truck that night."
