Chapter 19 - The Falling House

Blinding spotlights flooded through the shattered hangar doors as half a dozen tactical vehicles swarmed the airfield.

Dozens of state troopers and FBI SWAT operatives breached the perimeter, weapons raised and laser sights cutting through the smoke.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons and get on the ground!" a booming voice echoed over a megaphone.

I slowly stood up on top of the shipping container and raised my empty hands into the bright, piercing beams of light.

Olivia emerged from the control tower staircase, her hands held high, shouting that the shooter was subdued.

Tactical officers swarmed the container, securing David in heavy steel restraints and lowering him roughly to the ground.

Medical personnel rushed into the hangar, immediately tending to Detective Vance, who was miraculously still breathing despite his catastrophic wounds.

As the officers escorted Olivia and me out onto the cold tarmac, a sudden commotion erupted near the edge of the runway.

Two state troopers were dragging a disheveled, screaming woman toward the line of cruisers.

It was Lauren.

Her designer clothes were torn, her hair was matted with mud, and her face was contorted in hysterical rage.

She had reached the private charter plane, only to discover that the fuel tanks were completely empty.

When she saw me walking out of the hangar, unharmed and flanked by federal agents, she stopped struggling for a split second.

"Marcus!" she shrieked across the tarmac, completely abandoning all dignity.

"Tell them I was a hostage! Tell them David forced me to do it!"

"Marcus, please! I am your wife!"

I stopped walking and looked at her across the flashing red and blue lights.

I felt no anger, no hatred, and no lingering trace of the overwhelming guilt that had poisoned my soul for the past four months.

I only felt a profound, liberating emptiness.

"I don't have a wife," I said quietly, loud enough for the arresting agents to hear.

"My wife died the day she traded her humanity for a pile of dirty money."

May you like

Lauren let out a feral, desperate scream as the troopers forced her into the back of a police cruiser and slammed the door shut.

The golden child, the perfect suburban wife, was finally riding in the back of a cage where she belonged.
