Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

Gabriel drove alone through the flooded, deserted streets of the industrial district.
He had sent a completely unencrypted message to Damian Sterling, challenging him to a final meeting at the abandoned steel mill.
Gabriel knew he was walking directly into a heavily armed trap, but it was the only way to protect Mia and his nephew.
He parked his car a mile away and approached the massive, rusting steel mill on foot.
The rain was falling in blinding, heavy sheets, perfectly masking the sound of his tactical boots on the wet gravel.
He slipped silently through a broken ground-floor window, melting effortlessly into the deep shadows of the factory.
Sterling was standing arrogantly in the center of the massive factory floor, entirely surrounded by two dozen heavily armed mercenaries.
“I know you are hiding in the dark, Gabriel!” Sterling yelled, his voice echoing loudly off the metal walls.
“Bring me the encryption keys, and I will let your pathetic family live in exile!”
Gabriel did not answer with words.
He pulled the pin on a flashbang grenade and hurled it perfectly into the center of the mercenary group.
The blinding, deafening explosion completely shattered the stillness of the factory.
Gabriel opened fire from the elevated catwalk, his assault rifle tearing through the disoriented guards with terrifying speed.
The factory erupted into absolute, chaotic violence.
Gunfire flashed brightly in the darkness, illuminating the falling rain leaking through the rusted roof.
Gabriel moved relentlessly along the catwalk, dropping man after man with brutal, mechanical precision.
He was a man completely possessed by the desperate need to keep the woman he loved entirely safe.
Sterling panicked, grabbing a rifle and firing wildly up at the catwalk as he scrambled for the exit doors.
Gabriel leaped aggressively over the metal railing, dropping twenty feet and landing brutally on a massive shipping container.
He jumped down to the factory floor, cutting off Sterling’s only path of escape.
The remaining mercenaries tried to rush him, but Gabriel dispatched them with his combat knife in brutal, vicious close-quarters combat.
Finally, only Gabriel and Damian Sterling were left standing in the bloody, smoke-filled room.
Sterling raised his pistol, his hands shaking violently with absolute terror.
“You cannot kill me, Gabriel, I work for people who will completely destroy you!” Sterling screamed frantically.
Gabriel walked slowly forward, completely ignoring the gun pointed directly at his chest.
“There is nobody left to save you,” Gabriel whispered coldly.
Sterling pulled the trigger, but Gabriel moved with lightning speed, swatting the weapon away and driving his combat knife deeply into Sterling’s chest.
Sterling gasped violently, dropping to the wet concrete floor, completely dead.
Gabriel stood alone in the absolute silence, panting heavily as the adrenaline slowly drained from his exhausted body.

He pulled out his radio and pressed the transmit button.
“The threat is entirely neutralized, Mia, you are completely safe now,” Gabriel said into the radio.
