Chapter 2 - The Ambush

Gabriel threw the shattered pieces of the burner phone into the corner of the room.

“Marco, get the armored transport vehicles ready immediately,” Gabriel ordered, his voice cold and terrifyingly calm.

“We are moving them to the Gold Coast penthouse right now.”

Marco nodded silently, cradling the sleeping baby as he hurried out into the rain-soaked alley.

Gabriel turned back to Mia and offered her his large, calloused hand.

She hesitated for only a fraction of a second before placing her bruised fingers into his grip.

He pulled her gently to her feet, steadying her when her exhausted legs threatened to give out completely.

“Vincent Russo was the one who added you to the convoy today, wasn't he?” Gabriel asked her quietly.

Mia nodded, wincing as a sharp pain shot through her injured shoulder.

“He said the weather was too dangerous for a civilian cab, so he insisted I ride in the third SUV.”

“You were conducting an internal audit on Vincent's shipping divisions this week,” Gabriel stated, piecing the deadly puzzle together.

“I found a massive discrepancy in the offshore accounts yesterday afternoon,” Mia confessed, her voice trembling slightly.

Gabriel realized with horrifying clarity that Leo had not been the only primary target of the attack.

Vincent had orchestrated the kidnapping to eliminate the only accountant who could expose his massive theft.

They walked quickly out of the brownstone and climbed into the heavily armored black SUV waiting in the alley.

Marco placed baby Leo securely into a reinforced car seat in the middle row and climbed into the driver's seat.

The heavy vehicle accelerated smoothly into the dark, storm-drenched streets of Chicago.

Gabriel sat next to Mia in the back, keeping his tactical handgun resting casually on his knee.

They were less than three miles away from the impenetrable safety of his downtown penthouse.

Suddenly, a massive garbage truck pulled out from a side street and completely blocked the wet intersection ahead of them.

“Ambush!” Marco yelled, slamming his heavy boot onto the brakes.

The armored SUV skidded violently on the wet asphalt, stopping just inches from the rusted side of the truck.

Automatic gunfire erupted from the rooftops, raining a deadly hail of bullets against their bulletproof windshield.

Gabriel threw his massive body over Mia, shielding her and the baby from the deafening impact of the assault.

They were completely trapped in the kill zone.
